ASTANA, Oct. 10 (See)- President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev awarded on Tuesday Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb an honorary doctorate in Astana, Akorda press service reported.
The Head of State greeted the Grand Imam noting that the participation of such high-level religions figure in the VI Congress of Leaders of World is of great significance . “I hope that your participation in the Congress will be a great contribution to our common goal,” Nazarbayev said.
The two parties discussed issues of common concern and prospects for the development of interfaith dialogue.
Earlier, the National University of Eurasia awarded the Grand Imam an honorary doctorate at a ceremony attended by deans, professors, and university students.
Yarlan Sidikun, President of the University expressed his pride in the visit of the Grand Imam, stressing that the university’s keenness to establishing relations with Al-Azhar’s Mosques and religious centers.
During the ceremony, Al-Tayeb stressed that Al-Azhar’s approach is based on dialogue, acceptance of the other, in addition to a method of combined religious text and reason.
He also praised the role of Kazakhstan in reviving the renaissance of Islamic civilization, through its remarkable philosophers such as Abu Ibrahim Ishaq Al-Farabi, the author of Diwan Al-Adab, and Dictionary of Sahih.
